5 Tips to Staying Healthy After the Festive Season

The festive season has ended and you wake up feeling like Cinderella post-ball, staring at your reflection and thinking, “I need to make some wholesale changes.” This is of course a natural reaction to a month of excessive food, drink and conversations. Unfortunately most of us tend to overreact by drawing up daunting lists filled with unrealistic, vague goals, that we hope to achieve by yesterday. Yet research has consistently shown that only a small percentage of people actually follow through on their resolutions, precisely because they go about it all wrong.

But fear not, we’re here to help you with our five useful and easy to implement tips to get you back into tip-top shape after the festive season.

Hit the ground running.

As the saying goes, there’s no time like the present. Don’t linger on the couch making plans. Put on your beanie and gloves and go for a run, sign up today for that yoga class you’ve always wanted to join, or simply take the dog for a walk around the neighbourhood. Getting the year off to an active start sets a great precedent, and your dog will love you for it.

Start slow.

While its important to get going as soon as possible, the tendency is to overdo it to compensate for all the celebrating. Pushing ourselves beyond our limits will have the adverse effect of damaging our bodies, and making it that much harder to build momentum. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Think in terms of measurable results.

When setting goals, whether they are of the fitness or dietary variety, try to make them as specific as possible with measurable results. If your goal is to lose weight, set a specific target, so it feels like you’re making progress every day. Resolutions require strategy, not willpower.

Be social.

Just because it’s the end of the festive season doesn’t mean it’s all work and no play. Being social is one of the biggest predicators for health, happiness and longevity. It’s therefore important to incorporate time for socializing into your weekly routine. Better still, why not incorporate socializing into your active lifestyle; having active friends to motivate you along the way will certainly help to achieve your fitness goals more easily.

Plan a vacation.

The holidays are over and the tendency is to look at the New Year as the long, hard road ahead. That’s why it’s important to plan some well-earned pit stops along the way, to replenish and rejuvenate the mind and body. Having a vacation to look forward to will motivate you in the short term to work hard and stay positive.

So if you’re looking to get your year off to the healthiest possible start, follow our tips, reach for a can of Tranquini, and good things will happen.
